A year ago, single Quad-Citians found a new way to connect outside the bars. Now, local speed-dating founder Susan Esser is hosting an anniversary party to pairing successes.

We've had three engagements and a wedding,'' since the service began, she said. They meet at the Novel Cafe at the Bettendorf Public Library.

Ms. Esser began the speed-dating service in April 2001. After submitting their name, age and $20, people sit down to talk with other people, switching pairs every seven minutes and meeting at least 10 to 12 people a night. ``You meet new people every time,'' she said.

Past, present and future speed-daters are invited to the anniversary party at 7 p.m. Friday at Danceland Ballroom, 501 W. 4th St., Davenport. Tickets, available at the Novel Cafe, are $20. Strange Neighbors will provide live music.

There also will be a cash bar and hor'doeurves, and attendees can compete for prizes in The Dating Game and what Ms. Esser hopes to be the ``world's largest twister game.''

She said she now has 1,500 people registered with the service.

``I want people to have fun. I'm so sick of people judging people for the way they look or what they do,'' she said. ``(With 7 Minute Yenta) people go out that would never, ever meet normally. ''

For more information, call Susan at 355-7644 and leave your name, age and phone number.
